Filed under: Desktop, HAM Radio, Hobbies, Life, google, windows — Ben @ 7:54 pm

Google have released a new browser plugin that lets users enter virtual 3D rooms. As hard as I resist I can’t help but give it a try. Join me below – hopefully the embedded widget works:

Folkestone Earthquake: Photos Taken in Blackbull Rd Area

Filed under: HAM Radio, Life — Ben @ 8:09 pm

Just a quick note to say I have a few snaps of the damage caused by the earthquake in Folkestone today. I’ve uploaded them to my Flickr account. They mainly focus on the Blackbull Road area including Mead Road and Garden Road. I have the images in a much higher resolution – please drop me an email if you’d like copies.

For a technical writeup on the Earthquake have a look at the British Geological Survey website. The site shows seismograms of this tremor and where other quakes have taken place historically. If you felt the earthquake they are asking that you fill out a questionnaire.

My house has taken some damage but it could have been a lot worse. We had a chimney pot come down which landed in next doors garden. I can see daylight through a crack in the chimney stack and have lots of cracks in walls. In Garden Road there is a lot more visible damage with many chimney stacks completely destroyed and many fallen tiles. When you look at other events around the world it was a fairly minor event. But, its not something you see often in the UK and has left many people with homes declared unsafe. I won’t forget seeing all the confused and worried faces on the street at 8:20 this morning.

Site Syndication

Filed under: Life — Ben @ 10:19 pm

Just a quick note to let any random browsers know that I’ve chosen to sync some of my other blog posts with this site. This should give anyone who visits this site an idea about who I am and what I do, which is the point of this blog :) . So, if some posts appear that don’t appear on topic compared to what I’ve posted before, thats why.

Currently I am syndicated a blog about OpenID, which contains news, information and guides and Pan Linux, which talks about the Linux operating system and desktop.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Filed under: HAM Radio, Hobbies, Life — Ben @ 5:11 pm

Due to a real life move (Its looking like I will get the keys next week!), I will be shutting down my locally run webserver and moving hosted sites over to a dedicated host. Please excuse any downtime that may occur over the next few days (Most likely when I change the DNS).

London MGM Expo 2005

Filed under: Life — Ben @ 9:50 pm

Proof that I have actually been awake at 7:30 in the morning at some point in my life:

Luckily thanks to the clocks changing I got an extra hour in bed that night :)    So, the  expo.  It was a nice day out even though it wasn’t really my cup of tea.  Getting there and back was a bit of a nightmare thanks to various work being carried out on the railway lines.  A fair mix of stuff at the expo – a few computer game bits, lots of shops and stalls selling models, toys, books and DVDs.  The horror section was way smaller than I was hoping for.  The brother came away happy with a new set of pens for colouring his anime artwork.

Thank the Darlek for the blurry photos – it put me off by chasing me and shouting ‘Cheeeeese’.

I created this post with Flock.  Will be interesting to see how well it formats with Wordpress.

A blog, eh?

Filed under: Life — Ben @ 8:48 pm

Welcome to my shiney new blog. Not quite sure what I’m going to use this for yet – most probably to talk about the various hobbies and gadgets I spend my time toying with. We’ll see.

Topics will probably include:

- My first steps into compiling and playing with the GNOME desktop.
- Bits and bobs about HAM radio as I learn
- Reviews of the various junk I buy
- Random rants

The first thing I am going to do is take some photos of local sites to replace those snaps at the top … stay tuned!
